Owner of Rental Property Indicted for Tax Evasion

HONOLULU - The Department of Taxation announced that a Honolulu Grand Jury returned an indictment against Leticia S. Castillo for evading her general excise taxes on her rental income for the years 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Leticia S. Castillo  was charged with four counts of tax evasion, a class C felony.

The penalties provided by laws is a felony and upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than $100,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both for each year.

The Department of Taxation continues to encourage taxpayers to voluntarily file their tax returns.  The department will generally not initiate a criminal investigation when taxpayers voluntarily come forward to report their failure to file or other omissions.
