RE: Act 225, Session Laws of Hawaii 2002 (Act 225), Relating to the Use Tax

Act 225 requires the owner of a vehicle purchased out-of-State to provide proof the use tax due under chapter 238, Hawaii Revised Statutes, was paid before the owner can receive a certificate of registration. Act 225 also requires the Department to develop the forms necessary to prove the use tax was paid.

The Department will be working with the counties’ motor vehicle registration staff to implement Act 225.

Act 225 is effective beginning January 1, 2003.

Current forms and other tax information are available at the Department’s website at: www.hawaii.gov/tax. On Oahu, forms may be ordered by calling the Department’s Forms Request Line at: 587-7572. Persons who are not calling from Oahu, may call: 1-800-222-7572 (toll-free) to receive forms by mail or by fax.
